Instruction with Questions
First
Ask students what they already know about snow globes. Show them this fascinating (less than 4:00 minute) video about the history and invention of this fabulous winter treasure.

Second
Have students make a brainstorm list either on the board as a group or individually of things they associate with winter. Sometimes snow globes feature things other than winter items so it is up to you how you proceed with this. Things may include, trees, mountains, cabin, snowmen, ski resorts, etc.
Third
Trace a large circle on some light blue construction paper. The circle should be small enough to fill the inside of a 9×12 piece of construction paper. The white crayon or colored pencils look fabulous on this paper. If you happen to have watercolor pencils, these work even better than regular ones because they leave a thicker line.
Fourth
Review simple steps to making a 3D house if they choose to add that to their scene. If you need a simple video for directions, I recommend this one:

Fifth
Show them how to create the lines around the edges so that it looks like a sphere. I recommend white colored pencil but crayon could work also.
Sixth
- Remind them to overlap things like mountains.
- Have them draw their images “going off of the page.” This will help it look like you are only viewing it from one angle.
- Tell them not to set things on a horizon line, instead have the items sitting inside the snow like the snowman is in this example.
For added pizazz add a stream of liquid glue and glitter on your snowy parts.
Seventh
Finally, students cut out their circle, and a base of their own design using black or brown construction paper. Have them glue their globe and base onto blue construction paper.
