Using melted crayons on canvas, this fun, creative, art piece is perfect for any art classroom! It truly inspires students to dream, imagine and create.
Dream Imagine Create. Students ask me all the time, “Did you make that?!!” Yes. Yes I did. Here is how.
First, purchase TWO large boxes of Crayola Crayons from Amazon. Click Here
Remove the “dead” colors like brown and grey along with some of the yellow and green colors that are not so bright. This was totally subjective. I wanted the final product to be bright and vibrant. You could easily use these for a different project that is more organic or nature looking. Whatever you do save any “trash” crayons and send them to the Crayon Initiative. Click Here. They help collect and re-purpose unwanted crayons to prevent them from ending up in landfills. This project could lead to a great discussion with students about how to use other things we other-wise toss in the trash and re-use them to make art!
Lay the colors out in order in a line on the ground and then repeat the pattern so your rainbow repeats.
Use a hot glue gun to glue down each crayon onto a large canvas.
Then, having the canvas standing up, use a hair dryer to melt the crayons. I recommend doing this outside as it can splatter and make a mess.
Finally, use a transfer technique for the words. Print them out on a computer. Turn the image away from you and trace over the letters with a pencil. I use a window so it is easy to see them. Place the lead side down on the canvas and rub the pencil onto the canvas. I used the font Monotype Corsiva. Use black acrylic paint to paint on the words.
